Flex 2 and Red 5 Chat Live Example

October 13th, 2006

I did not put a working example of the Basic Chat example using Flex 2 and Red 5 up on my server early. I needed to install Red 5 to be able to put it up. I wasn’t sure when I was going to be able to get to it so I posted the code first. I had some free time this morning and decided to give the Red 5 server install a try. It was not terrible bad, and I’ll try and write up my install experience later. But for now the working online basic chat example can be found at:

http://renaun.com/flex2/red5/BasicChat.html

You can view the source by right clicking on the application.

I had some issues with the Red 5 server running even when I logged off the server. I think i have it worked out with a nohup for now. I will need to figure out how to install red5 with a proper start and stop script. If any one knows send me an email…

I have made some minor updates to the live examples, default button and auto scroll position.

The server side code that is need is provide with the Red 5 project. This example uses the fitcDemo located in the sample applications of the Red 5 package.

Any chance that you can update this to add video. Video chat in flex 2 is something that took me for ever to figure out. My code has several classes and this was something that was so easy to do in flash8. I am hoping that someone else has a better implementation method!

A video example will mostly likely be created in the near future. It wont be as simple but with Flex it really is pretty easy to do.

Wow - I’ve found your site the most useful place for Flex Info. The working examples of well organised code communicate way more than the lengthy tutorials on other sites.

I too have been tracking Red5’s progress and I’m very excited at the prospect of using it with Flex. Thanks for this and all the other demos - you’ve really helped me.

    Hey Man,

I’m resorting to nohup too for red5 - have you thought of any other solutions??
