PS3 Flash Player Version 9.0.124.0

I was reading about some updates for the PS3 and notice mention about full screen flash. I was thinking that wasn’t possible unless they had Flash Player 9, previously the PS3 only had Flash Player 7. The details on the web are all fuzzy and I couldn’t tell what it really meant. But either way I power up the PS3 and in the browser went to:

http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about

On that page it shows that the Flash Player version for my PS3 with firmware 2.52 has Flash Player 9.0.124.0. That is news to me, and I thought would be big news to alot of people. Well go try it out and let me know if I am not going crazy.

Note I tried Hulu.com and was able to play videos but clicking on the fullscreen button it didn’t quite work. It didn’t go into full screen mode but it did get rid of the menu buttons and became smaller in its original place, which was a little weird.

I guess PS3 firmware 2.53 is due out anytime now (it was leak that it was going to be release on Thanksgiving Day). The 2.53 release is suppose to fix the Flash Player fullscreen issue, I guess we’ll see. Either way with Flash Player 9 you should be able to run Flex applications on the PS3 now.

I have joined Jaxtr

I have placed a Jaxtr button on the side of my blog. I like the idea of having a way for people to contact me with out giving out my phone and worrying about it being spammed (yes spam phone calls are on the rise).

If anybody else has a Jaxtr account and wants to try it out please let me know, or better yet give it a try and call me. As I understand a worst I’ll be able to go hear the voice mail, and if you are on my friends list it will connect directly to my phone. Even international calls work. Its a bit like paying for Skype In minutes, but I haven’t used that much either can be for sure.

You can read more about Jaxtr at http://jaxtr.com.

Well, now any one off the web can give it a try and give me a call. We’ll see how this Jaxtr stuff works out.

Posting from Playstation 3 on Yellow Dog Linux 5.0

To bad there is not a Flash Player 9 for Linux PowerPC distros or I would be coding Flex right now. So I am writing this post on my Playstation 3 using Yellow Dog linux 5.0 (the free version was just released today) as the “Other OS” on the box. The installation process was not that terrible hard. I was not able to install the Flash Player 7 or 9, and am not sure there is any Linux PowerPC Flash Players out there, any one know?

I am running off the wired network port, it would be cool if I could find the driver for the wireless card in the Playstation 3 itself. Other quirks is the whole HDMI to DVI only capable of connecting to HDCP ready devices. I am currently doing a 720p out through component into a VGA box converter into my monitor. Its not bad but nothing like true 1080p would be. Been sick for the last couple of days, what a time to get the flu bug, so I haven’t had all the time I wanted to get messing around with the Playstation 3. Maybe you’ll hear more on it later from me for now I am off to play some games.

Flex Profiler Sneak Peak

In the “End-to-End Dubugging Flex” session we got the chance to preview a Flex profiler (it’s not definite that we will ever see it but is known that developers want it).

With the Flex 2.1 update they fix it so you can breakpoint Flex Framework source file. You can actually do this now with no visual cue by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-B. It will show in the breakpoint list in the debugger prespective. Another good tidbit is use the filters variables view to make viewing variables easier.

I learned that you can debug binding with the BindingManager.debugBinding().

Tom Reilly is the Flex engineer that has worked on the Flex Profiler and did the demo. The profiler is written in Flex and has a few charts showing different exeuction times and memory usage. He showed sampling of CPU execution with roll over stack traces. It also has a call graph tree allowing you to drill down methods called paths. This will be slick if they can get it out us.

Flex 1.5 Panel’s titleStyleDeclaration default

The document for Flex 1.5 Panel attribute titleStyleDeclaration is a little mis-leading.  But to much of my surprise I found a nice tidbit in the description of the titleStyleDeclaration.  There is a default styleName for this attribute, which contridicts other statements on the Panel documentation page.

The default value is “windowStyles”.

Here is what it says in the top part of the documentation:

titleStyleDeclaration="Default value is undefined, which causes the title bar to have white bold text."

And here is what it says in the Property Detail area:

Style declaration name for the text in the title bar. The default value is windowStyles, which causes the title to have bold text.

Between the windowStyles and the ControlBar style I was able to control the text color of the Panel’s header and controlBar, as well as not affect any text coloring inside the Panel component.
