Optimized Adobe Flash Player 10 for Devices

More things are heating up around the Open Screen Project. At CTIA Wireless conference Adobe Systems Incorporated and Texas Instruments Incorporated announced a technology collaboration to optimize Adobe® Flash® Player and Adobe AIR® for the TI’s OMAP™ mobile applications platform.

This has always been one of my personal favorite areas Adobe is now more fully engaged in. Getting the Flash platform on devices, not just mobile but other devices, is a great opportunity with the full potential yet to be known. The last time I felt this type of opportunity was when Flex sdk changed their license from a server to be free (Flex 1 -> Flex 2). So far there have been a few announcements since MAX 2008 where they showed off Flash Player 10 on some different devices.

Looking forward to the future…

PS3 Flash Player Version 9.0.124.0

I was reading about some updates for the PS3 and notice mention about full screen flash. I was thinking that wasn’t possible unless they had Flash Player 9, previously the PS3 only had Flash Player 7. The details on the web are all fuzzy and I couldn’t tell what it really meant. But either way I power up the PS3 and in the browser went to:

http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about

On that page it shows that the Flash Player version for my PS3 with firmware 2.52 has Flash Player 9.0.124.0. That is news to me, and I thought would be big news to alot of people. Well go try it out and let me know if I am not going crazy.

Note I tried Hulu.com and was able to play videos but clicking on the fullscreen button it didn’t quite work. It didn’t go into full screen mode but it did get rid of the menu buttons and became smaller in its original place, which was a little weird.

I guess PS3 firmware 2.53 is due out anytime now (it was leak that it was going to be release on Thanksgiving Day). The 2.53 release is suppose to fix the Flash Player fullscreen issue, I guess we’ll see. Either way with Flash Player 9 you should be able to run Flex applications on the PS3 now.

Would Microsoft uppercut Jumpcut

In all the posts about Microhoo and “what would Microsoft do with XYC properties of Yahoo!” I haven’t seen any mention of one acquisition Yahoo! made a while back. Its Jumpcut. Yahoo! snatched them up for only $150 million, compared that to what Google paid for YouTube. I know its different but I think Jumpcut has a nice feature set and very good usability. They also where one of the first ones out with full blown video editing on the web. Its all Flash/FLV based so it would be interesting to see what Microhoo would do with it.

iPhoneDevCamp at Adobe was a hit

A fellow Adobe employee helped make a very successful iPhoneDevCamp happen over the last weekend. I would have loved to attend but I am in vegas waiting for a new addition to the family to arrive.

Here are some of the highlights:

Attendee’s thoughts
LA Times Article on iPhone and dev camp in San Francisco
Application created during the hack-a-thon

AIR on PBS, “An AIR of Invisibility” by Cringley

The best quote, “My money is on Adobe simply because of those two invisible weapons, PDF and Flash.”. The comments are heavy on flaming Adobe/Flash and pumping Microsoft. Read the full article here.

Official Now - Flash/Flex Developer for Adobe

I have made the official switch to Adobe land. I have the red badge now. I have been working as a contractor on a cool project in Adobe developing AS3/Flex classes and components for the past 2+ months.

It is real fun and things are moving fast both job and personal wise, it will be hectic couple of months. I think as things settle down more I’ll have more perspective of what it really means to be an Adobe employee. But for now I am enjoying the team I am working with and trying to stay up with all the work.

Flash CS3 - copy motion to ActionScript 3.0

Ok, all this integration across the products is nice, but the coolest feature I have seen so far is the “Copy motion to ActionScript 3.0″ feature.

The ability to take a Flash animators motion code and save/paste it as AS 3.0 is nice. The ideas are flowing…Version control motion code, Flex component cool motion effects,…

I can’t wait til the end of April to get my hands on the new CS3 suite.

Posting from Playstation 3 on Yellow Dog Linux 5.0

To bad there is not a Flash Player 9 for Linux PowerPC distros or I would be coding Flex right now. So I am writing this post on my Playstation 3 using Yellow Dog linux 5.0 (the free version was just released today) as the “Other OS” on the box. The installation process was not that terrible hard. I was not able to install the Flash Player 7 or 9, and am not sure there is any Linux PowerPC Flash Players out there, any one know?

I am running off the wired network port, it would be cool if I could find the driver for the wireless card in the Playstation 3 itself. Other quirks is the whole HDMI to DVI only capable of connecting to HDCP ready devices. I am currently doing a 720p out through component into a VGA box converter into my monitor. Its not bad but nothing like true 1080p would be. Been sick for the last couple of days, what a time to get the flu bug, so I haven’t had all the time I wanted to get messing around with the Playstation 3. Maybe you’ll hear more on it later from me for now I am off to play some games.

YouTube to VCast on Verizon

This news announcement sparks a lot of questions in my mind.

YouTube moves to the small screen

First off its a little confusing because it says,

Users who subscribe to Verizon’s Vcast service will be able to view content on the YouTube website via their mobiles.

and then states this,

The new deal will mean that VCast users, who pay $15 a month to watch and download video to their mobile, will have access to a limited number of approved videos from YouTube.

How do you go from saying that the Vcast service will be able to view content on the YouTube website and then say they will have access to a limited number of approved videos? First off, the YouTube.com website is a Flash/FLV based media player and Vcast is a Mpeg4 based service, would be interesting to know how they implemented that one. I assume this might be some of the reason for limited number of approved videos? because converting FLV to other formats right now is not something of a smooth process. But we are talking about going from a larger resolution to a smaller one so even if you are going from a compressed format to another you will be alright. Most YouTube.com movies are compressed alot though so I wonder if they are limiting it to videos they have the source to?

Well like I said this new article sparked more questions then answers. It was nice to see that they hooked up a 5-digit code to send videos to for uploading videos. This should make the expansion of social-video-networking go up quite a bit. It would be really cool, this is way out there, to have this fuel Verizon’s relationship with Adobe and push the Vcast system to use FLV (and Flash Lite 2.X/3.0???) instead of or in addition to the Mpeg4 based service of right now. Anything that pushes Flash forward on the mobile device arena is cool.

MGM Grand website makes The edge of Flash list

Now I am from Vegas and have seen the MGM Grand web site for a while now. I believe its one of the greatest examples of Flash Video, Flash, and HTML. The experience and the navigation all comes together really nicely.

Here is the site it self MGM Grand
