Update to PlayBook SDK provides Flash Builder Burrito Plugin

Posted on December 1, 2010 | 19 comments

If you get the latest PlayBook SDK download and run the installer you can now install the PlayBook plugin into Flash Builder Burrito. Here are some quick steps/tips to see if its up and running.
NOTE: If the pictures seem blurry just click on them to get a larger view

At the point in the install process where it asks for the Flash Builder 4 installation folder, just point it to Flash Builder Burrito Preview folder. See image:

Now the next thing to notice in Flash Builder Burrito is you can start a new Mobile Project and select the “BlackBerry Tablet OS” as a targeted platform.

New Flash Builder Mobile Project with BlackBerry Tablet OS platform

This is pretty straightforward for new projects but what about existing Flash Builder Burrito projects you might have created while building AIR for Android applications. Well do not fear you can setup it up to target the new platform. Click on your existing project and go to Properties -> Flash Build Packaging -> BlackBerry Tablet. Then check the appropriate checkboxes to enabled the new platform. See image below:

Enabling BlackBerry Tablet as a target platform in Flash Builder mobile project

An then in the Run or Debug launch configuration you just select the platform you want. If you select BlackBerry Tablet OS in the Target platform drop down the On device: area has a few more options. Here is what it looks like:

Flash Builder Mobile project launch configuration targeting BlackBerry Tablet OS

That’s how to get up and running on all the new mobile workflow’s for Flash Builder Burrito and the BlackBerry Tablet OS.

NOTE: This basically makes my old PlayBook for Flash Builder Burrito Launch Configurations useless.

    Hi Renaun,

I had a question regarding Flash Builder Burrito. I’m trying to get the Blackberry Target Platform Working, I’ve tried installing the Blackberry AIR SDK twice but no luck. I’m using Windows 7, Please let me know if you know what the problem is. I can still create Playbook projects using the Blackberry SDK, but not with Hero. I still cannot test any Playbook apps on the simulator because I can’t setup the approprate Run Configuration.

In Flash Builder Burrito (MAX preview version) do you see in a new Flex Mobile project -> Mobile Settings the platform option BlackBerry Tablet OS? Do you see in your /Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Flash Builder Burrito preview/sdks/ a BlackBerry tablet OS SDK 0.9.1?

      • http://digiflare.com Mukul Seth

Nope, I do not see an option for Blackberry Tablet OS in the New Mobile Project wizard, only the Google Android Option. Yes, I have folder named “blackberry-tablet-sdk-0.9.1″ under the Burrito “sdks” folder. I’ve tried uninstalling Burrito and reinstalling it and the Blackberry AIR SDK v. 0.9.1 again. Still not luck.

        • http://www.renaun.com Renaun Erickson

In Burrito go to About Flash Builder -> Installation Details -> Features and let me know the version number. Should be: 4.5.0.287807

And I assume in the BlackBerry SDK installer application you selected the Flash Builder Burrito location for the Flash Builder 4 install step (not the AIR sdks step)?

          • http://digiflare.com Mukul Seth

Yep.. the version number is correct, and I did select the Adobe Flash Builder Burrito Install directory for the first step (C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder Burrito)… and I think I’ve been leaving it to the default for the second step (C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder Burrito\sdks\4.5.0) – I’m thinking that may be wrong. :S But I’ve also just tried my unzip location for AIR SDK 2.5 — no change. Is there a site which has very detailed installation steps, maybe there’s something I’ve overlooked.

          • http://www.renaun.com Renaun Erickson

That is the steps, I would post on the BB forums about the issue and maybe they can help with the plugin issue not showing up. First I have heard of this so not sure.
            In C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder Burrito\dropins\ is there a blackberry-tablet-sdk.link file?

          • http://digiflare.com Mukul Seth

Yes, the file is there. I have been using Beta2, so I don’t think it’s that. Thanks for the help guys. I’ll try posting this issue in the BB forums.

Did you get your Flash Builder Burrito from labs.adobe.com recently?

          • Michael

            Renaun:

I am having the exact same problem and I verified all the questions you asked of Mukul. Any more ideas?

There is no current fix, RIM has been made aware of the issue.

“There is no current fix, RIM has been made aware of the issue.”

I’ve had the same problem and managed to resolve it. Couple of observations:

            - I had installed the Flash Builder Burrito selecting English-North America
            - Did not follow the step explained in “Getting Started” which says: “If you installed Flash Builder 4.5 on Windows® 7, to complete the integration of the plug-in, complete the following steps once: log in with system administrator privileges; right-click the Flash Builder Burrito shortcut; choose Run as Administrator”

So I uninstalled Burrito and reinstalled selecting “English – International” language option and after installing Tablet OS Air SDK ran Burrito as Administrator and that did the trick.

Let me know if that helps.

The solution described here worked for me as well. I was experiencing the same issue previously and with a reinstall, selecting English-International, and then running as admin… things seem to be working now.

            Thanks!

            @Mukul,
Did you make sure to download the 11/29 build of the BlackBerry Playbook SDK? I noticed that there were 2 spots for the SDKs. I almost downloaded the October build by mistake. The one at the top of this page was the one to get
            http://us.blackberry.com/developers/tablet/
            size is 70.948 MB
You want the Beta2, not the Beta1.

    • Andy

I have the same problem. Can you please let me know when you get the answer? thanks.

This is fantastic! Just installed and was able to output to my Playbook in VMPlayer. Very simple and now I can write in Flex (not quite as used to actionscript + QNX).

Hello all, I performed the steps from this article but today I have a problem. When creating a Mobile Project I have no reference to the BB SDK. It us installed succesfully, I have the latest Burito…
I had a project yesterday where the BB SDK was included, I’m lost here.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,

    • http://www.renaun.com Renaun Erickson

With the Burrito Mobile projects you will not have to set a Project -> Properties -> Flex Compiler to a BlackBerry Tablet SDK, you just need to add the target platform of BlackBerry Tablet OS and then in Project -> Properties -> Flex (or ActionScript) Build Packaging -> BlackBerry Tablet you can check the checkbox that includes the BlackBerry Tablet OS libraries (seen in the picture above). If you don’t have the BlackBerry target platform then you might have the bug ppl are seeing, no fix right now.

So launching a Flex Mobile Project on the simulator using the latest plugin in Burrito works fine but there doesn’t seem to be a way to add the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK to the project.

Is there a way to create a standard AIR package and setup the same debug launch configurations

    • http://www.renaun.com Renaun Erickson

Did you check the Project -> Properties -> Flex Build Packaging -> BlackBerry Tablet OS and then check the “Include BlackBerry Tablet OS libraries into build path”.
