Pacifica Keynote in Barcelona

Serge Jespers did a great job handling the Pacifica keynote in Barcelona. You can catch the video of the keynote on the web. We’ll be starting the private beta in a couple weeks so make sure to fill out a survey (see my other pacifica post for the link).

A Zend Framework Powered Flex Picture Book (ZendCon 2007 session)

Ok that was a long title. But I just got done with presenting at ZendCon 2007 in San Francisco and feel like a long title. The session was geared to take Cal Evan’s, “Flex and PHP: Party in the Front, Business in the Back”, a do some Flex enhancements on the Front end side.

What came out of the session was a Flex RSS Picture Book. Using Ely Greenfield’s FlexBook component, the picture book displays images from the keyword’s of the articles description text.

Here is the live example of the Flex RSS Picture Book, remember to click on the image to see the Article’s title and description.

You can find the Flex RSS Picture Book source here, this source includes just the MXML and a slightly modified FlexBook source to handle crossdomain security. You’ll need to get the PHP source from Cal Evan’s original article.

MAX 2007 Session Source Files

You’ll find the PDF’s of the session on Flex and PHP on the MAX website. I think its available to people who attended MAX and later it will be available to everyone. The didn’t seem to put up the actual source code that went along with the session. The session was gear for someone with no Flex experience, but the people attending MAX and the session had plenty of Flex experience.

Between trying to change up the session for the higher skill level, the machines having issues, and the internet not working on the time what I presented at MAX differs slightly from the material here. You can find a excerpt from the PDF handout here to get your going on the PHP side of the session. You’ll find on the last page of the PDF instructions of how to setup Apache PHP and mySQL on a Windows XP box as well as how to setup the Flex Builder 3, PHPEclipse plugin and the Zend Framework.

Either way you can find plenty of information on Flex and PHP examples on my blog. Here are two links to some source files:

MAX and Pacifica

I mentioned a few months ago that I join the Adobe Voice team. Since joining i have been working on a cool project, now codenamed Pacifica. Yesterday was a great at MAX. All the hard work paid off and the Pacifica team was able to show the new project in both the 2nd day keynote and the sneak peaks. Overall the presentations went well. But there seems to be some confusion what Pacifica is all about.

You can get some info on the blogs and news links below:

2nd Day Keynote

Pacifica Team Member

Some key points what the Pacifica Service initial release is:

    High Quality Voice
    Text and Presence
End to End (or Point to Point)

Its important to point out that the developer owns the whole experience. Adobe doesn’t keep any user data or user list information of the developers applications. Its not just about making voice calls and buddy list any more. The developer can create new and interesting experiences out side the phone concept.

Like what was mentioned at MAX, the Pacifica team is starting a private beta this month, go fill out the survey.

MAX Ramblings

So this is my first MAX as an Adobe employee. I still feel a strong connection with the community. But with my team, Adobe Voice, being part of the sessions today I am definitely getting a different perspective of the conference.

The Flex and PHP hands on sessions are going fairly well. But I believe they where geared a little to much towards the beginners so I am changing as I go. That makes for a fun presentation each time, hehe.

Of course I am up early and in bed late, which I am feeling it today. The Birds of the Feather sessions were great, like always, last night. First, I was in the Papervision 3d session. Thanks to Ben Stucki, who wasn’t at the conference, I got to see the AIR bus come out of the screen right at me (3d glasses, papervision, and picture sphere). Also I can’t leave out John Grden for hosting the BoF and Doug for bring the glasses for Ben. The Flex BoF had a very large attendance, last years was much more informal which was better. Either way, props to the Flex team and its good to see them get bigger and bigger. They are hiring and have plans to grow the size of the team.

The last BoF was Custom Component development with a panel of many of the communities greats. It was a good discussion and full of many fun comments.

So far so good, go MAX.
